Dharmanagar (Tripura) [India], Mar 29 (ANI): Tripura Congress leader Pragya Deb Burman has said her primary agenda after coming to power is to scrap the Citizenship Amendment Bill that seeks to provide Indian citizenship to non-Muslims from Bangladesh, Pakistan and, Afghanistan who came to India before December 31, 2014.
Burman is the Congress' candidate from East Tripura (ST reserved) constituency for the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.
"I believe Congress is going to come to power. It's going to be a win-win situation for us. My primary agenda is Citizen Amendment Bill. It should be scrapped" Burman told ANI on Thursday after launching her election campaign.
"The Citizenship Amendment Bill will not help India as the need of the hour is development, education, employment and better living standard for the people. But the BJP for its vote bank is trying to implement the bill," she added.
The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha on January 8.
On February 13, the Bill lapsed in the Rajya Sabha, amid protests by members of several Opposition parties. Several organisations had staged massive protests over the Bill, asserting that the legislation will create law and order problems in the North East.
Burman started her campaign by travelling from the Agartala railway station to Dharmanagar.
Alleging that the BJP government in the state has totally failed in fulfilling the aspirations of the people, Burman said: "If the Congress comes to power then the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) will be empowered through direct funding from the Centre."
The TTAADC is an independent body administering the Tripuri-dominated areas of the state.
Out of the 2 seats at stake in the state, East Tripura will go to polls on April 18 and West Tripura on April 11. The results will be declared on May 23. (ANI)
