"Judge said that this not rarest of rare case, hence capital punishment wasn't awarded": Advocate on RG Kar verdict

Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], January 20 (ANI): Amid the demand to give the death penalty to the accused in RG Kar medical rape-murder case, Advocate Rehman said on Monday that the judge said that the case is not a "rarest of the rare" case, hence the capital punishment has not been awarded.
"Additional Judge of Sessions court, Sealdah has sentenced life imprisonment till death to Sanjay Roy. The court directed the state government to give compensation of Rs 17 lakhs to the victim's family. CBI had demanded capital punishment for the convict in the case. The judge said that this not a rarest of the rare cases, hence capital punishment has not been awarded," Advocate Rehman told ANI.
The Sealdah Civil and Criminal Court has given life imprisonment to the accused Sanjay Roy in the RG Kar rape and murder case on Monday. Along with this, the court has also fined Rs 50,000 to the accused.
During the hearing of the case, the Central Bureau of Investigation sought "capital punishment" for the accused Sanjay Roy.
Meanwhile, Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar expressed dissatisfaction with the verdict, calling for a deeper investigation.
Speaking to ANI, Majumdar refrained from commenting against the court's decision.
"We wanted the highest punishment (for the convict Sanjay Roy). Being an elected representative, I can't say anything against the court verdict. The public of West Bengal does not believe that only one person is involved in the RG Kar rape-murder case. I think there should be more depth in this, as Sanjay is saying that there were also police and other people involved," the BJP leader said.
BJP MP Samik Bhattacharya also claimed that the entire people believed that Sanjay Roy was not the only one involved in this case.
"The judgement is the manifestation of the mood of the people of the country and of West Bengal. Even now, the entire people believe that Sanjay Roy was not the only one involved in this case; those who sent Sanjay Roy there, those who altered the place of occurrence. What about the punishment to such people?" Bhattacharya said.
The case, which involves the rape and murder of a trainee doctor whose body was found on August 9 in the hospital's seminar room, sparked widespread protests. After the incident, Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer at the hospital, was arrested in connection with the crime. (ANI)
