New Delhi [India], July 18 (ANI): Congress MP Manickam Tagore on Friday criticised the central government over Jan Dhan Yojna, claiming that the scheme is the reason behind the "massive inactivity" of bank accounts in the country.
In a post on X, Tagore, citing the World Bank's Global Findex 2025 report, stated that over 35 per cent of bank account holders in India do not use their bank accounts, which he claimed is the highest among developing nations.
He alleged that millions of bank accounts were opened under the Jan Dhan Yojna for the sake of publicity, rather than for "real" empowerment.

"World Bank Exposes Modi's Jan Dhan Scam. Over 35% of bank account holders in India don't use their accounts--the highest among developing countries. That's 7x the global average. So much for 'financial inclusion!'" the three-time Lok Sabha MP from Virudhunagar said.
"The World Bank's Global Findex 2025 report directly blames the Jan Dhan Yojana--hailed as Modi's 'masterstroke'--for this massive account inactivity. Millions of accounts were opened for headlines, not for real empowerment," he added.
He noted that the accounts go unused due to a lack of funds and trust, as well as discomfort among the users.
"Why do accounts go unused? 40% said they don't have enough money. 30% feel uncomfortable using them. Half live far from banks or don't trust the system," Tagore said.
Calling it a policy disaster, Tagore said, "This isn't a people problem--it's a policy disaster. A clear indictment of BJP's hollow schemes. The share of inactive accounts in India hasn't improved since 2017. While the world moved forward, India stayed stuck in fake celebrations and headline management."
He further went on to say that Ministers in the NDA government abuse opposition leaders when they raise issues in parliament, resulting in the country's poor suffering.
"No income. No access. No dignity. Just slogans. When the Opposition raises these issues in Parliament, we are mocked, attacked, and silenced. Modi won't listen. His ministers abuse him. Democracy suffers. The poor pay the price," he said.
"Economist PM Dr. Manmohan Singh: Real inclusion, dignity, stability. Propaganda PM Modi: Fake numbers, empty accounts, inflated claims. Jan Dhan is not empowerment. It's exposure," the Congress MP further added. (ANI)
