New Delhi, July 26 (ANI): Stating that she would contest state elections from Manipur, activist Irom Charu Sharmila, who has been fasting since 2000 against the controversial Armed Forces Specials Powers Act (AFSPA), has decided to end her protest on August 9. Sharmila while addressing the media said, "I will break my fast as the government has failed to give any positive response... I will fight elections to resolve the issues." Sharmila, 44, also known as the 'Iron Lady' of Manipur spent years fasting. She was force fed through nasal tubes and was also arrested multiple times. Sharmila began her non-violent protest in November 2000 after 10 people were killed by troops of the Assam Rifles near a bus stop at Malom, in the outskirt of Imphal. (ANI)
