Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], March 13 (ANI): The government has “every right” to investigate Robert Vadra but laws should not be applied selectively, Congress president Rahul Gandhi said on Wednesday and demanded a probe against Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Rafale deal issue.
Investigate Mr Vadra. I am the first person to say that but law should apply to all,” Rahul said here during an interaction with students of Chennai's Stella Maris College, one of whom asked him to comment on a probe being pursued against his brother-in-law Vadra.
“The government has every right to investigate. The law should apply to every person but laws should not apply selectively,” he said.
The Congress president went on to add, “The Prime Minister has his name in government documents that say he is directly responsible for negotiating parallelly with Dassault on Rafale. Investigate everybody, be it Mr Vadra or the Prime Minister."
Rahul claimed that “everyone knows that the Prime Minister stole Rs 30,000 crore” but “nothing is happening. PM is not speaking.”
Responding to a question on what would the Congress do to strengthen the country's economy if voted to power, Rahul instantly said that his party would simplify the GST and try to reduce taxes as much as possible.
"The GST which has been introduced in the country is too complicated and has too many layers of tax. It makes the life of small shopkeepers and businessmen tough. We are going to reform the GST and make it one simple tax and as low tax as possible," he said.
Rahul, while alleging that Modi helped economic offenders of the country such as Mehul Choksi and Nirav Modi to flee the country, he mistakenly called Nirav Modi as Narendra Modi. He, however, immediately apologised for the slip of tongue.
The Congress president spoke about level playing field and said: "There is a lot that needs to change in India's attitude towards women. I am of the opinion that women should be encouraged into positions of leadership."
He underlined, "Women should not be second to men in anything. Women should be at the same level as men in everything."
He assured, "In 2019, the Congress party has decided that we are going to pass women reservation Bill in Lok Sabha. We are also going to reserve 33 per cent in all government jobs at the national level." (ANI)
