New Delhi [India], July 1 (ANI): Days after the ruling Trinamool Congress issued a show-cause notice to party MLA Madan Mitra over his comments on the Kolkata gangrape rape, Bharatiya Janata Party MP Bhola Singh said wondered that instead of taking action, that TMC leaders were blaming the woman (rape survivor) for the incident.
Singh told ANI on Tuesday, "Instead of supporting the woman and taking action, we are seeing that the TMC leaders are saying that it is the woman's fault. We are seeing the TMC MLA's statement that it is the woman's fault, and questioning why she went there. Even if she made a mistake, she has suffered; the government should take action against all those involved..."
He was referring to the remarks of Kamarhati MLA Madan Mitra on the incident, following which the Trinamool Congress Sunday issued a show cause notice to its party leader.
The controversy erupted after Mitra's comment, where he suggested that the incident could have been avoided if the victim had not gone alone to the location.
"This incident has sent a message to girls that if someone calls you when the college is closed... nothing good will come of it. If that girl had not gone there, this wouldn't have happened. If she had informed someone before going or had taken a couple of friends with her, then this wouldn't have happened," Mitra said on Saturday.
Earlier, on June 25, a female student was allegedly gang-raped inside the South Calcutta Law College in Kolkata's Kasba area.
Meanwhile, Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Kumar Verma urged everyone, including the media, to refrain from revealing the identity of the victim of the alleged gangrape case which took place inside the campus of the South Calcutta Law College on social media or anywhere else.
Manoj Kumar Verma said, "The incident that took place at South Calcutta Law College is being investigated. This is a very sensitive case, and I do not want to reveal the details of the investigation at the moment. In less than 12 hours, three people were arrested. Later, another person was also arrested. We are collecting all the evidence. The identity of the victim is a very sensitive issue, and I request that everyone refrain from revealing the identity of the victim on social media or anywhere else. I am making this request on behalf of the Kolkata Police. All necessary actions are being taken by police, and I assure that police will do everything possible."
Meanwhile, a four-member BJP fact-finding committee also visited Kolkata to assess the situation. The delegation includes former Union Ministers Satpal Singh and Meenakshi Lekhi, Lok Sabha MP Biplab Kumar Deb, and Rajya Sabha MP Manan Kumar Mishra.
The main accused in the case, Manojit Mishra, has been taken into custody along with three others. The SIT continues to probe the matter. (ANI)
