India to take up with China the issue of blocking of Brahmaputra tributary: MEA
New Delhi [India], Oct. 6 (ANI): The Ministry of External Affairs on Thursday said India would take up with China the issue of blocking of Brahmaputra tributary and other relevant issues that occurred after the last meeting will be taken up at the next meeting of the expert level mechanism. Replying to a media query, MEA spokesperson Vikas Swarup said, "There is a bilateral agreement with China to share information on cross border rivers, including Brahmaputra and Sutlej." "The two countries have an expert-level mechanism, which meets regularly to discuss issues concerning cross border rivers. It has been conveyed to the Chinese side that they should be mindful of the interests of the lower riparian while undertaking any projects on these rivers," he added. The Chinese side has conveyed on several occasions that they are only undertaking run-of-the-river hydro power projects, which do not involve diversion of the waters of the Brahmaputra, he said.
