Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) [India], May 6 (ANI): Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Monday that India, which ranked 11th in the GDP rankings, is currently the 5th largest economy in the world, adding that by 2027 the country will become the third largest economy.
Urging the voters to cast their franchise in favour of the BJP, Singh said, "With your blessings, Narendra Modi will become Prime Minister for the third time and by 2027, India will rank third in economic power."
He said that India's prestige and stature have increased on the world stage under the leadership of PM Modi.
Addressing a public meeting in Lucknow, the Defence Minister said, "Earlier, when we used to go to countries outside and say something on international platforms, nobody used to take us seriously. People used to say that even though we are the biggest nation in terms of population, but this is a country of poor people. But now, under the Modi-led government, the prestige of India has gone up and the whole world listens to us on international platforms."
"Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, and even Manmohan Singh had said that they would remove poverty from India, but they couldn't. After PM Modi came to power, magic has happened. Even the NITI Aayog says that magic happened in India. It says that 25 crore have been brought out of the poverty line in the last 10 years," Singh said.
Singh said that PM Modi facilitated the return of stranded Indian students from Ukraine after speaking with leaders of Russia and Ukraine, which no other world leader could do.
"Various Indian students were studying in Ukraine. Their parents demanded from our prime minister that the children be brought back. Every parent in India was worried. What no other prime minister in the world could do, our PM did. He called up Russia's President Putin and Ukraine's President Zelenskyy and facilitated the return of stranded Indian students," he said.
Lucknow will vote in the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha elections on May 20. Rajnath Singh will face Samajwadi Party candidate Ravidas Mehrotra in this seat.
Rajnath Singh in 2019 had defeated Samajwadi Party Poonam Shatrughan Sinha with over 6.3 lakh votes. He had defeated Congress candidate Rita Bahuguna Joshi by a margin of 2,72,749 votes in 2014. (ANI)
