New Delhi [India], August 27 (ANI): BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla took a jibe at West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and said that if so much security had been provided at the RG Kar hospital then it would not have been desecrated by miscreants on the night of August 14.
Tear gas shells, and water cannons were used and protesters marching towards the West Bengal State Secretariat Nabanna were lathi-charged on Tuesday by security personnel on the Howrah Bridge amidst the row over the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape and murder case.
Shehzad Poonawalla said, "Mamata Banerjee is not Didi but is behaving like Idi Ameen. Mamata Banerjee's government has protected the rapists, destroyed evidence, and suppressed the voice of truth, for which the Supreme Court and the High Court reprimanded. Now once again when the students, doctors, and common citizens' are taking out Nabanna Chalo Abhiyan' to demand justice for the daughter, Mamata Banerjee's government is blocking the roads with containers."
He further said that the Bengal police are arresting the students and calling the protesters murderers.
He further said, "Three-tier security has been provided and 6000 policemen have been deployed. If so much security had been given at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital then the crime scene would not have been desecrated. If so much security had been provided at the college then there would not have been injustice with the trainee doctor. From the first day case was called suicide, FIR was registered late, cremation was done in a hurry, renovation was done and goons were sent to vandalise the spot."
He further said that the protesters are being called murderers and arrested.
"Why are Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and AAP leaders silent? Should we not ask for justice for the victim? This is the real face of the INDIA bloc. They don't have respect for the constitution, nor they care for freedom to speak or safety of girls," he added.
Earlier, protestors gathered at the Howrah Bridge, climbing atop police barricades and clashed with police personnel during the 'Nabanna Abhijan' protest march.
They were seen breaking and dragging away the barricades that were erected at the Santragachi area en route to the Secretariat.
Ahead of the protest, called amid the ongoing row over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, police had thrown a ring of security around the West Bengal state secretariat.
On Monday, Additional Commissioner of Police Kolkata, Supratim Sarkar said that they have rejected an application by 'Paschimbanga Chhatro Samaj' to hold a rally called 'Nabanna Abhijan' on August 27. He added that the police rejected their application because the group did not seek formal permission and provided insufficient details.
The brutal rape and murder of a woman trainee doctor on the R G Kar Medical College and Hospital premises sparked outrage all over the country. The incident shook the entire nation, and since then several protests have been staged demanding justice for the victim.
The trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9. (ANI)
