BJP president Amit Shah and Assam Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma

New Delhi [India], Mar 21 (ANI): The BJP on Thursday said that Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is not being fielded in the ensuing Lok Sabha election from Assam as he is currently tasked with the responsibility of ensuring inclusive development of the northeast region.
Taking to Twitter, BJP president Amit Shah said: "Keeping in mind the responsibility of NEDA chairman and development of the entire north-east region, the Central leadership has urged him to focus on his current responsibilities and contribute to making the party stronger in Assam and north-east."
"I hope that Assam BJP and the entire North-East will accept this decision of the party. I am confident that this decision will take Assam and the entire Northeast towards the direction of development," he said.
Sarma is currently not only Assam's Finance Minister but also heads the North-East Democratic Alliance (NEDA).
The BJP chief said that Sarma's candidature was recommended by Assam unit party's election committee and the workers unanimously for the ensuing Lok Sabha election.
Assam's 14 constituencies will see polling in three phases on April 11, 18 and 23.
Shah's statement came after the BJP on Thursday evening released the list of 184 candidates for the ensuing Lok Sabha polls, which start from April 11 in seven phases, concluding on May 19. The counting of votes will take place on May 23. (ANI)
