Himachal Pradesh: Union Minister Manohar Lal, CM Sukhu discuss energy, urban development priorities

Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) [India], November 7 (ANI): Union Minister Manohar Lal held a high-level meeting in Shimla on Thursday with Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu to tackle pressing challenges in the state's Energy Department and Urban Development sectors.
These discussions underscored the potential of hydroelectric power in Himachal Pradesh and explored ongoing projects and cooperative efforts in urban development.
The Union Minister of Power and Housing & Urban Affairs characterized the meeting as part of the regular review of the Energy and Urban Development departments, emphasizing the federal government's role in supporting local development initiatives.

Highlighting Himachal Pradesh's resources, he noted, "As far as hydropower in Himachal Pradesh is concerned, I think there is a lot of potential here and one of the issues from the Himachal Pradesh government was that the state's share in free power should be increased. There was a mutual consensus on this and after consensus, it was considered."
The Union Minister assured that an actionable plan would be developed within two months to address Himachal's share of power benefits, reflecting the country's interest in advancing the hydropower capabilities.
"The benefit of the hydropower project is in the interest of the country and the people, that is what we want. It is our priority to take all these things forward," Manohar Lal stated.
The discussions also touched upon other crucial areas, such as the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) project, where Himachal claims a 7.19 per cent share. Union Minister Manohar Lal acknowledged these claims and mentioned ongoing efforts to resolve inter-state disputes.
"The people of Punjab will also discuss it and sit together to find a solution," he explained, noting the legal proceedings pending in the Supreme Court over related issues.
In addition, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu commended the Union Minister for engaging with states.
"The Union Energy Minister has started going to all the states and holding meetings; it is a very good start. I praise it and thank him," CM Sukhu said.
He highlighted that such meetings allow states like Himachal to address its concerns directly with the Centre.
"States like Himachal also get open time for discussion in this, and we also get a chance to develop," he added.
The Chief Minister further pointed out that the state has unique needs and limitations, with water being the primary resource for power generation. Referring to regional projects such as the Sunni Lohri Dhola Siddh and Kuther power projects, Sukhu explained that discussions had taken place regarding the state's royalty rights after 40 years of operation, with a decision expected by January 15.
Green energy and solar power goals were also discussed in the meeting. Manohar Lal reiterated the national commitment to green energy targets, specifically the goal of generating 500 gigawatts of solar power by 2030, with plans to minimize dependence on fossil and thermal plants. He highlighted that hydropower is a primary renewable option for Himachal, but clarified that the national approach would need to balance regional needs with broader policy objectives.
"There is not enough source here...Thermal is not an option, but hydro is the only scope here," he said.
Chief Minister Sukhu expressed optimism following the meetings, noting that both the energy and urban development discussions yielded positive outcomes for Himachal Pradesh.
"There have been good discussions on both the subjects, and we will move forward with this...I thank (the Union Minister) for listening to us and taking a decision seriously," CM Sukhu said.
The leaders agreed to continue their collaborative efforts to address Himachal's unique needs, including the challenge of limited industrial resources and the demand for increased power share. Both officials emphasized the importance of national policy alignment and mutual understanding between the Centre and the state. (ANI)
