"Heavy setback for Narendra Modi, his agenda...": Brinda Karat on LS Poll results

New Delhi [India], June 5 (ANI): After the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) fell short of the majority mark in the Lok Sabha polls, Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Brinda Karat came down heavily upon Prime Minister Narendra Modi stating that it was a heavy setback for the latter and his agenda.
"This is a heavy setback for Narendra Modi, his agenda, and the agenda of the RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh). Their ideas were not accepted by the people of India. Modi ji's guarantee did not work", the CPI (M) leader said while speaking to ANI.
"The BJP will now have to run a coalition government... BJP did not get a majority... If they consider this as a victory, then the people of India can give them such a victory time and again... Uttar Pradesh is an example of the diverse culture of our country, which they tried to destroy..." she added.
According to the Election Commission of India (ECI), the CPI (M) secured four seats in the Lok Sabha polls- Alathur (Kerala), Sikar (Rajasthan), Dindigul (Tamil Nadu), and Madurai (Tamil Nadu), marginally improving its performance from the 2019 LS polls.
The vote share of the CPI (M) was recorded at 1.76%, surpassing the 2019 figure, which stood at 1.75%.
The counting of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections was held on Tuesday. According to the Election Commission of India, BJP won 240 seats, much lower than its 2019 tally of 303. The Congress, on the other hand, registered a strong growth winning 99 seats. The INDIA bloc crossed the 230 mark, posing stiff competition, and defying all predictions.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has secured a third term, but the BJP will need the support of other parties in his coalition primarily -- JD (U) chief Nitish Kumar and TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu. (ANI)
