“Has only added to mystery”: Jairam Ramesh after Amit Shah says "don't fuss" over Dhankhar's resignation

New Delhi [India], August 25 (ANI): Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Monday said that there may be more to the story than meets the eye after Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday said the Opposition should not make a fuss over Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar's resignation

The Congress leader further praised Dhankhar for being a stickler for norms, proprieties, and protocol, and for speaking fearlessly for farmers' welfare and judicial accountability.

In a post on X,  Ramesh said, “Today, the Home Minister has tried to say more. But he has only added to the mystery. There is simply no explanation why the irrepressible and ebullient Shri Dhankhar - who championed the cause of farmers - has been completely incommunicado for well over a month.”

The Union Home Minister, in an interview with ANI, said that Dhankhar resigned due to health issues and dismissed the opposition's claims that he was under "house arrest".

"Dhankhar Sahab's resignation letter is clear in itself. He has cited health reasons for his resignation. He has also expressed heartfelt gratitude towards the Prime Minister and other ministers and government members for his good tenure."

Dhankhar stepped down on July 21, citing health reasons, but according to Congress leader there's more to the former Vice President's "unexpected resignation".

“Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar suddenly and unexpectedly resigned as Vice President of India on the night of July 21st, 2025. This was unprecedented. A day later, the PM merely wished him good health,” said Ramesh.

In a veiled attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, the Congress leader wrote, “This entire resignation episode is actually bizarre and reflects how G2 function.”

Meanwhile, Shah cautioned against reading too much into Dhankhar's resignation, saying "we shouldn't make a fuss out of all this." He encouraged people to respect Dhankhar's constitutional role and his decision to step down.

He said that Dhankhar's resignation should be viewed through the lens of his official statement rather than through political interpretations.

On claims of “house arrest” of Dhankhar by some opposition leaders, Shah said, "It seems like your interpretation of truth and lies is based on what the opposition has to say. We shouldn't make a fuss out of all this. Dhankhar held a constitutional post and discharged his duties as per the constitution. He resigned due to personal health reasons. One should not deliberate much on the issue."

The opposition is speculating about the reasons behind Dhankhar's resignation, with some suggesting it was forced or due to differences with the government.

However, the BJP has maintained that Dhankhar resigned due to health reasons and dismissed suggestions of any differences with him.

Dhankhar resigned on the first day of the monsoon session of Parliament on July 21, stating that he wanted "to prioritise health care and abide by medical advice." At the time, he was serving as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha and had submitted his resignation letter to President Droupadi Murmu. (ANI)
