Gurugram: Single tenants of Essel Towers approach SDM against discriminatory rules by RWA
Gurugram (Haryana) [India], August 12 (ANI): A group of women residents of Essel Towers, a housing society on MG Road in Gurugram, has approached the local authorities against the Resident Welfare Association's (RWA) discriminatory rules that prohibit single tenants from letting guests of the opposite gender, even if it is a family member, enter their place. The single tenants have filed a written complain to the Sub-Divisional Magistrate. "They have assured us that they are going to serve the notice to the members of the managing committee today for a meeting on August 18," a lawyer and one of the single tenants, Shivani Singh, said. "We have been informed that the managing committee is in no position to make any such rules at the moment, because there has been no general body meeting of the society members and no majority consensus has been passed. This meeting was supposed to be held on August 21. Till then, any such policy is against the law of the land," she added. Earlier, the women had accused the Resident Welfare Association (RWA) of discriminating against single tenants. The women said that the RWA has introduced discriminatory rules that prohibit single tenants from letting guests of the opposite gender, even if it is a family member, enter. The matter got worse, when on August 4, a group of single tenants got into a heated argument with other residents. After this, one of the single tenants, a lawyer, Shivani Singh, wrote a post on Facebook and also shared a video, which clearly shows a resident saying, "You are supporting prostitution in the society." The post was widely shared and sparked a debate on the social media over the freedom of single tenants across the country. However, the RWA had denied anything like that was said during the heated exchange between two sections of residents within the society compound on Friday night. (ANI)
