Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], November 14 (ANI): Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivkumar on Tuesday paid tribute to former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on his 134th birth anniversary in Karnataka's Bengaluru.
" Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, played an important role in laying the foundation for the social, economic and educational development of the entire country. Believing that children are the future of this country, Nehru worked hard for children's rights and created an opportunity for every child to reach their full potential and contribute to the country's growth and development. Nehru's visionary, progressive thoughts are a model for today's young leaders" the Deputy CM of Karnataka said.
He also emphasised that the State Government was working toward upliftment of the common man.
"We have set a trend and we are changing the economic condition of the common man. We are helping everyone that is the strength of the Congress government," DK Shivkumar said.
Earlier, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi paid tribute to India's first Prime Minister on his birth anniversary, at Parliament in the national capital.
"Paying tribute to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru ji on his birth anniversary, who took India from zero to the pinnacle, the creator of modern India, the fearless guardian of democracy and our source of inspiration," Congress President Kharge posted on X (formerly Twitter).
"His progressive ideas advanced India's social, political and economic development despite all the challenges and encouraged the people of the country to live together at every moment, without any discrimination and always keeping the country first," Congress President said in a post.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also paid tribute to former PM Nehru, saying that Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru is a thought of "freedom, progress, and justice."
"Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru is a thought--of freedom, progress, and justice. Mother India today needs these values of 'Jawahar of Hind', like an ideology, in every heart," Rahul Gandhi posted on X (formerly Twitter).
Children's Day is celebrated on November 14 every year as a mark of respect to the first Prime Minister of independent India.
Nehru was fondly called 'Chacha Nehru' and was known for emphasising the importance of giving love and affection to children. After the death of Nehru, it was unanimously decided to celebrate his birthday as 'Bal Diwas' or Children's Day in India.
Nehru was born on November 14, 1889, in Uttar Pradesh's Prayagraj. He breathed his last on May 27, 1964.
He became the Prime Minister on August 15, 1947.
In 1954, the United Nations declared November 20 as Universal Children's Day, and India used to celebrate it but after the death of Prime Minister Nehru in 1964, a resolution was passed in the Parliament unanimously declaring the day of Pt. Nehru's birth anniversary as National Children's Day. (ANI)
