Golaghat (Assam) [India], March 15 (ANI): Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday praised Union Home Minister Amit Shah after he inaugurated the Lachit Barphukan Police Academy at Dergaon in Assam's Golaghat district.
Union Ministers Sarbananda Sonowal and Pabitra Margherita were also present on the occasion.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that, in keeping with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's focus on SMART policing, the Lachit Barphukan Police Academy will house a weapon simulator to prepare our forces for real-world combat scenarios without the hazards and costs involved and ensure their basic training.
In his speech, CM Himanta said, "The people of Assam are extremely grateful to Union Home Minister Amit Shah for his unwavering commitment to establish Dergano's Lachit Barphukan Police Academy as the country's leading destination for training police personnel under a Rs 1000 crore modernisation program."
"Today is the golden day for Assam police and Assam. After 400 years, we have been able to construct this police academy in the name of the Great Ahom General Lachit Barphukan. We welcome Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The police academy in Dergaon has already given training to 21,000 police personnel. We have spent Rs 167 crore and constructed this upgraded police academy with a Police Museum and academy building. We will spend around Rs 400 crore more to construct quarters and other facilities in the second phase. We will construct a big sports complex here like Sarusajai Stadium. We want to construct a CBSE school, one Nursing academy, and one skill training centre here so that Assam police as well as local youths can get benefits. We will try to construct a Police Medical College here," the Assam CM said.
He further said that in the last four years the crime rate in the state has reduced 60 per cent, chargesheet rate has increased from 46 per cent to 66 per cent and cases of atrocities against women have reduced from 26,000 to 5,000.
"This academy is one of its kind in the country," the Assam Chief Minister said. (ANI)
