New Delhi [India], February 10 (ANI): BJP's winning candidate from Malviya Nagar, Satish Upadhyay, expressed confidence in the party's future plans for the city, stating that the development work currently underway across India under Prime Minister Modi's leadership will now also extend to Delhi.

"AAP-da has finished in Delhi...The development work that is going on across the country under the leadership of PM Modi will now start in Delhi also...The glory of the national capital will return," he said.

On February 8, Upadhyay defeated three-time AAP MLA Somnath Bharti in Malviya Nagar; his wife, Aarti Upadhyay, thanked the people and assured them of speedy development in the constituency, which she said had "deteriorated" under AAP rule.

According to the Election Commission of India (ECI), Upadhyay won by 2,131 votes against Bharti.

"BJP gave a huge responsibility to Satish. Malviya Nagar's condition had deteriorated and we were assured that the people here will vote for BJP... Now development will speed up in Delhi... I thank PM Modi for showing faith in all of the party's candidates," Aarti Upadhyay told ANI.

Earlier on Sunday, BJP leader Vijender Gupta slammed the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), criticising its years of misgovernance in Delhi and claiming the party failed to fulfil its commitments while in power. He also asserted that the BJP would ensure the delivery of all promises made to the people.

Speaking to ANI, Gupta said,"...We will fulfil all the promises made by us to the people of Delhi...I am an MLA and whatever the party will decide we will follow that..."

Taking a jibe at AAP, he said the party had ignored the concerns of the people during its tenure, only to now realize the importance of governance when faced with the prospect of the BJP taking over.

"When they were in power, they were oblivious to their responsibilities. Now, they suddenly remember their duty," he said, using the phrase, "the cat goes on Haj after eating a hundred rats."

He further added, "People will see the difference. They will appreciate the BJP."

Gupta also added, "You are interested in the Chief Minister's post. I am a lawmaker and a party worker. I was an MP, and I am one of the 48 legislators the party values equally."

BJP won 48 seats in a historic mandate, returning to power in the national capital after 27 years. AAP won 22 seats, while Congress failed to win a single seat for the third time in a row. (ANI)
