New Delhi [India], April 3 (ANI): Union Minister and National President of Lok Janshakti Party Chirag Paswan slammed the opposition for opposing the Waqf Amendment Bill 2025 and said that just because Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the NDA have brought the bill, that's why the opposition is terming it "wrong."
"The opposition should also cooperate if certain amendments are being introduced for the betterment. Why do they have objections if transparency will be achieved...Just because the Prime Minister, NDA has brought the bill, they (opposition) are saying that this wrong...All the opposition leaders just gave generalised statements. They did not speak on facts...They are raising questions about my secularism, but they are supporting those who, according to the Sachar Committee, are responsible for the miserable condition of the Muslims...In the Bihar elections, everything will be clear," Paswan told ANI.
LJP (Ram Vilas) MP Shambhavi Choudhary said that the Waqf Amendment Bill 2025 will stop politics being done in the name of religion.
"How is this bill unconstitutional? The bill was sent to the JPC...there was a positive discussion in the JPC and then it was introduced in the Lok Sabha...This bill will stop politics being done in the name of religion and it is not an attack on the Muslim community at all," Choudhary said.
Earlier, the Lok Sabha passed the Waqf Amendment Bill 2025 after a marathon and heated debate during which members of the INDIA bloc fiercely opposed the legislation while the BJP and its allies in strongly supported it, saying it will bring transparency and enhance the efficiency of Waqf boards.
The bill was passed after amendments made by the opposition members were negatived. The House sat beyond midnight to pass the legislation.
Speaker Om Birla later announced the result of the division. "Subject to correction, Ayes 288, Noes 232. The majority is in favour of the proposal," he said.
The revised bill was brought by the government after incorporating recommendations of the Joint Parliamentary Committee which examined the legislation which was introduced in August last year.
The bill seeks to amend the Act of 1995. The Bill seeks to improve the administration and management of waqf properties in India. It aims to overcome the shortcomings of the previous act and enhance the efficiency of Waqf boards, improving the registration process and increasing the role of technology in managing waqf records.
