Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], January 7 (ANI): West Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar on Sunday questioned why the Congress state chief, Adhir Ranjan Choudhury, was backtracking on his statement on the attack on Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials, adding he wondered if it was because of the "fish fry alliance" with the TMC.
"The ED is doing its work. That is the reason why it was attacked. Two days ago, Adhir was saying that action should be taken under section 356. Today he is backtracking. Is this because of the fish fry alliance?" Sukanta Majumdar told ANI on Sunday.
The Trinamool Congress and the Congress are partners in the INDIA bloc, which was been formed to take on the Narendra Modi government in the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
Earlier, on Sunday. reacting to the lookout circular issued by the ED against TMC leader Sheikh Shahjahan, Adhir claimed that the ED is itself an 'idiot' and a lookout circular is of no use.
"What will ED do? ED is itself an idiot. The ruling party in Bengal will look after him. The ruling party works to protect dangerous people in the party. This is a 'look-after' government. So, what is the use of a lookout circular?" the state Congress chief said.
Majumdar claimed further that the lookout notice has been issued against Shahjahan because he helps in settling Rohingyas in West Bengal and has a connection with Bangladesh's Jamaat.
"A lookout notice has been issued against this person (Shahjahan Shiekh). This is because we were claiming that this person helps in settling Rohingyas over here and has a connection with Bangladesh's Jamaat. And he can flee to Bangladesh," the state BJP chief alleged.
Majumdar also appealed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Bangladesh External Affairs Minister Abdul Momen to "keep the borders tight" so that Shahjahan and people associated with him are not able to flee.
"I appeal to our Union Home Minister, External Affairs Minister and Bangladesh External Affairs Minister to keep the borders tight. Your (Bangladesh) elections concluded today. From tomorrow your borders may be loose. But you need to ensure that these people do not flee," the state BJP chief said.
Majumdar added Shahjahan and his associates have been known cross the border and bring in Rohingyas illegally.
"This is because these people go to and fro across the border, bring in Rohingyas and engage in all kinds of illegal activities. So there should be a close watch on them," he said.
Earlier, ED officials were attacked and their vehicles were damaged in Sandeshkhali village of North 24 Parganas in West Bengal on Thursday. The incident occurred when they attempted to conduct a raid on the residence of block-level leaders affiliated with the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) party, relating to an alleged ration scam case.
