Eyeing lucrative offers, Delhiites throng showrooms to buy BS III vehicles

New Delhi [India], Mar 31(ANI): With auto companies scrambling to liquidate stocks after being hit by the Supreme Court order to ban BS III vehicles from April 1, people in the national capital are swarming in showrooms in huge numbers to buy the massively discounted vehicles. People were seen thronging showrooms to buy vehicles as dealers are offering heavy discounts to the tune of 40 percent. But to their disappointment brands such as Honda motors, TVS and Bajaj are running out of stock. "I am here outside this showroom but it is closed. They are saying that they have run out of stock," said a local. "I have been standing here since morning, waiting for the showroom to open. I am ready to buy anything at such low prices, then may it be a bike or a scooter," another eager customer said. The apex court on Wednesday banned the sale and registration of BS-III vehicles from April 1, stating that health of citizens is more important than commercial interests. In a bid to handle the pollution menace in the country, the court passed the order saying that BS-III vehicles could aggravate the already deteriorating air quality in the country. The apex court had earlier on March 28 heard a plea seeking ban on registration of BS III vehicles from April 1. The Centre had told the apex court that automakers were allowed to clear unsold stocks after cut-off date when BS III and BS IV norms were introduced. It was conveyed to the apex court that technically and financially it was impractical to convert BS III vehicles to BS IV. The development comes in the wake of the court monitoring the alarming air pollution levels in the national capital region. (ANI)
