Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) [India], August 17 (ANI): Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Sunday called on the Election Commission of India (ECI) to take the right decision and "walk the path of truth." Calling attention to the poll body being under "undesirable pressures," the SP leader said that the support of crores of voters will be their "protective shield," with one "corrective step" ensuring the welfare of the people.
"The Election Commission needs not just reform but an inevitable fundamental transformation. Today, the historic responsibility of saving democracy rests on their shoulders. It is understood that they are under various kinds of undesirable pressures, but they should not think they are alone," Akhilesh Yadav posted on X in hindi.
Yadav's remarks are made amid the charges of voter list manipulation levied against the ECI, and the opposition against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in poll-bound Bihar. The opposition parties have alleged that the poll body is colluding with the Bharatiya Janata party to steal people's rights away, with Congress' Rahul Gandhi submitting "proof" of voter list manipulation in a recent press conference. In response, the Election Commission has asked the Congress leader to submit a signed affidavit under oath and submit his evidence for investigation.
The SP chief Akhilesh Yadav also underlined that the ECI needs not only reforms, but rather an "inevitable fundamental transformation."
"When the Election Commission starts walking on the right path, the support of millions of Indians will become its protective shield. The public and public trust naturally align with those who walk the path of truth. A single correct and courageous step by the Election Commission can ensure the future and welfare of countless generations of the country," his post added.
The SP leader also indirectly called on the ECI to listen to their conscience.
Meanwhile, in Bihar, Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi is set to launch the party's 'Voter Adhikar Yatra' from Sasaram, organised against the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list in the state.
Both the leaders of RJD, also slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing them of destroying the Constitution by trying to steal people's voting rights away.
"The people of the BJP are misusing Constitutional agencies, trying to destroy democracy and the Constitution. Bihar's land is the land of democracy. We will not let this happen, that BJP destroys, we will fight wherever we want and we will not let our rights be erased," the Bihar LoP Tejashwi Yadav said.
Meanwhile, the ECI has flagged that the time to raise issues about errors in the electoral rolls, even those in the past, was during the "Claims and Objections" period.
According to the EC, the precise objective behind sharing the electoral roll with all political parties and candidates was so that any issue regarding the same can be raised on time. The constitutional body raised the issue of political parties and their Booth Level Agents not examining the electoral rolls at the appropriate time. (ANI)
