Patna (Bihar) [India], April 17 (ANI): Hitting out at the RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav for his remarks on the Waqf Amendment Act, Union Minister Giriraj Singh on Thursday said that people of the Bihar does not want their state to turn out like the West Bengal.
Singh was responding to the remarks made by Tejashwi Yadav, where the RJD leader stated that "Waqf Amendment Act would be thrown in the dustbin" in Bihar if RJD is voted to power in the upcoming Assembly polls.
"Tejashwi Yadav said that when he comes to power, he will not allow the Waqf Amendment Act to be implemented... Do they want to turn Bihar into Bengal? Are they reminding people of Bihar of the Murshidabad incident to turn this into Bengal? People of Bihar do not want to turn the state into Bengal under the leadership of RJD," Singh said.
Referring to the recent Murshidabad violence in West Bengal linked to protests over the Waqf Act, Singh accused the Trinamool Congress government, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, of turning a blind eye to violence in the state.
"Mamata Banerjee did not obey her 'raj dharma', and under her protection, violence is taking place, and the era of killings is underway," the BJP leader added.
Giriraj Singh's remarks come in the backdrop of widespread political debate over the amended Waqf law, which has been challenged in the Supreme Court by multiple opposition leaders and organisations.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court might issue an interim stay on the act today, following petitions and a two-hour-long hearing on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, Tejashwi Yadav met with Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Lok Sabha LoP Rahul Gandhi and Congress MP KC Venugopal ahead of the high-stakes battle that is expected to take place in Bihar with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), consisting of Janata Dal (United) led by Bihar CM Nitish Kumar, and the Bharatiya Janata Party, fighting against the Mahagathbandhan, consisting of Congress, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and left parties.
The Bihar Assembly elections are due to be held later this year. (ANI)
