Uttar Dinajpur (West Bengal) [India], April 20 (ANI): In a blistering attack on the BJP a day after polling ended for three Lok Sabha seats in North Bengal, ruling TMC leader and sitting MP Abhishek Banerjee said on Saturday his party will never bow to the dictates of 'Delhi'.
Addressing a public rally in the Raiganj Lok Sabha constituency of North Bengal, the TMC national general secretary, who is also the nephew of party supremo and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, claimed that if there was one party that the BJP was genuinely in a fight with, it was the TMC.
"There are 1600 political parties in this country. However, if there's one party that the BJP is genuinely in a fight with, it is ours. This is because they tried myriad intimidatory tactics but couldn't scare us or make us cower before them. If we bow down, it will only be before the Almighty and our elders. Dilli ke darindon ke aage Trinamool Congress nahi jhukega (the TMC will never bow to the dictates of Delhi's thugs). This is my guarantee to you," Abhishek, the sitting TMC MP from Diamond Harbour, said.
Calling on people to give a "440-volt shock" to the BJP, which has set itself a target of '400 paar' (400-plus) in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, the TMC MP said the "jolt should be so strong that the ripples of it are felt in Delhi and the BJP's bid to return for a third term at the Centre is defeated".
"PM Modi says 'Ab ki baar 400 paar (let's target 400-plus seats this time)'. To this, I would say that his party will be jolted by a 440 volt shock on June 4. Yesterday, during Phase 1 of polling in Coochbehar, Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar, our mothers, sisters, and brothers came out in large numbers to shower their blessings on us. They gave a befitting reply to the BJP yesterday," Abhishek claimed.
He alleged further that sitting BJP MP from Raigunj, Debasree Chaudhuri, who is bidding for a fresh term in the Lok Sabha from Kolkata Dakshin this time, was seldom seen in the constituency after her win in the 2019 general elections.
"She was a Union minister for 2 of the 5 years of her tenure in the Lok Sabha. But not a single penny was allocated for the development of Raigunj. She chose eventually to dump the people of Raigunj and enter the fray from Kolkata Dakshin instead," he added.
Urging voters to put their trust in the TMC this time, Abhishek claimed that the party lost Rajgunj to the BJP in 2019 as the "CPI(M) and the Congress cut into the Opposition vote share".
Raiganj will go to polls in the second phase of the general elections on April 26.
The TMC has fielded Krishna Kalyani, a BJP turncoat, from this seat. (ANI)
