New Delhi [India], June 4 (ANI): The Congress party thanked the people of India after the party improved its tally from the last elections and the INDIA bloc leading in over 230 seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Congress posted a picture of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, party leader Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, and former AICC president Sonia Gandhi, posing with the victory symbol. It was captioned “Dhanyavad Hindustan.”

It also posted a picture of the Indian Constitution with Rahul Gandhi in the background, captioned, “Hindustan ki Janta ki Awaaz – Samvidhan.”

As the counting for the Lok Sabha elections was nearing its end, the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) crossed the majority mark and is ahead on around 300 seats, while the INDIA bloc, defying all predictions is leading in 232 seats, according to the latest trends.

Notably, most exit polls predicted a straight term for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with quite a few of them projecting a two-thirds majority for the ruling BJP-led NDA.

Rahul Gandhi won the seat of Rae Bareli by defeating BJP’s Dinesh Pratap Singh by a margin of 3,90,030 votes. Gandhi had contested this seat aiming to save the lone bastion of the party in the state after he lost Amethi in 2019.

The Congress leader also won the seat of Wayanad, which paved his entry to the Lok Sabha in 2019. He defeated Communist Party of India-Marxist candidate Annie Raja by 3,64,422 votes.

The Congress party also addressed a press conference in the national capital on Tuesday.

The party termed it the "political and moral defeat" of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on whose name the Bharatiya Janata Party campaign was run.

"This election results are 'janta ka result'. This is the victory of people and the democracy. We were saying that the fight is Modi vs the people. In the 18th Lok Sabha election, we humbly accept the result. People have not given a full majority to any party. BJP asked to vote for one person, the mandate has gone against Modi. It is his political and moral loss. The person who sought votes on his name, it's a huge loss for him,” Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said.

Rahul Gandhi lauded the people of Uttar Pradesh after the INDIA bloc registered a strong performance in the state in the Lok Sabha elections, defying the predictions made in the exit polls.

“UP ki janta ne kamaal karke dikha diya...The people of UP understood the politics of the country and the danger to the Constitution, and they safeguarded the Constitution. I want to thank all the states but I would especially thank Uttar Pradesh. I thank them for supporting the Congress party and the INDIA alliance,” he said.

According to the latest data by the Election Commission of India, the INDIA bloc is ahead on 44 out of 80 seats in the state. Samajwadi Party is ahead on 38 seats while the Congress party is leading on 6 seats. (ANI)
