Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], November 1 (ANI): Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Friday condemned Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Arvind Sawant's "imported maal" remarks against Shiv Sena leader Shaina NC saying that derogatory comments against women have no place in our society.
"Derogatory comments against women have no place in our society, especially in Maharashtra, where we proudly celebrate and honour our Ladki Bahins. We celebrate our inspiring women icons and follow their footsteps in empowering women and over the past two and a half years, we have continued to uplift and recognize their contributions," Pawar posted on X.
"Such remarks, especially by a senior Shiv Sena UBT leader against Shaina NC ji, are highly condemnable and unacceptable. They go against the very values of respect and dignity that define our progressive Maharashtra," the Deputy CM added.
This comes after Sawant stoked a controversy by calling Shaina "imported maal". He said, "Look at her condition. She was in the BJP all her life and now she has gone to another party. Imported 'maal' does not work here, only original 'maal' works here."
Meanwhile, a case has been registered at Nagpada Police Station against Sawant on a complaint by Shaina NC over his "imported maal" remark.
Earlier in the day, Sawant claimed that he didn't mention Shaina's name alleging that he's the real victim of defamation.
The Shiv Sena (UBT) leader said that his comments was that someone who is an outsider won't work here adding that Shaina is her friend and he respects her. "I haven't taken her name. I just said that someone who is an outsider won't work here. It's their habit to uproar," Sawant told ANI.
He also launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling him an expert in lying. Without taking the name, Sawant pointed out the alleged irrigation scam of Rs 75,000 crore against Deputy CM Ajit Pawar, who was later made Deputy Chief Minister.
"PM is an expert in lying. He alleged an irrigation scam of Rs 75,000 crore and later made that person the minister, later the Deputy CM. The party which has such character - will they speak the truth? PM Modi said nothing about the Manipur incident. When PM Modi went for his election campaign - the Prajwal Revanna case was before everyone, who went to campaign for his father?... The party which has such a weak foundation will blame others. They want to set a narrative," Sawant said.
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader alleged that despite his 55-year career in politics, where he's always respected women, his opponents are trying to tarnish his reputation.
"They are filing defamation - but I will say that they are defaming me. I condemn their intent to defame me. I have been in politics for 55 years. I have always respected women. Those who are supporting her - ask them to answer whatever questions I have asked... Shaina NC is my friend, she has worked for me. I respect her... They are "satta jihadi" people, what our leader Uddhav Thackeray says about them," Sawant said. (ANI)
