DCW seeks Social Welfare dept's response on 'acute shortage' of old age homes

New Delhi [India], Oct. 25 (ANI): The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) on Tuesday observed that there was an "acute shortage" of old age homes in Delhi. In a letter to D.K. Mishra, Director, Department of Social Welfare, DCW chairperson Swati Maliwal noted that as per Section 19(1) of the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007, it is mandatory for the department to establish at least one old age home in each district. Besides, the commission observed that as per the Act, the capacity of the home should be at least 150. Stating that the commission found that the act had not been implemented properly in Delhi, the chairperson sought information regarding the steps taken by the department for implementation of section 19(1) of the Act and the reason for its non-implementation. Besides, the commission also sought to know about pending proposals, if any, with the department for creation of old age homes in Delhi. Maliwal said the commission is committed to work closely with the department in improving the living conditions of the elderly in Delhi, while asking it to provide the requisite information within seven days of receipt of the communication.
