Crime against Dalits on the rise under SP regime: Mayawati
New Delhi, Aug.5 (ANI): Taking a strong exception to death of a 26-year-old Dalit man in police custody in Kanpur, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati on Friday said crime against the weaker sections of society have been on a rise ever since Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party government took reins of Uttar Pradesh. Speaking to media outside the Parliament, the BSP supremo said that mere suspension of involved officials in the case will not suffice as they need to be put behind bars. "Ever since the Samajawadi Party government came to power in UP, crime is increasing. Especially the weaker sections and Dalits are being exploited. Recently a Dalit died in a police custody in Kanpur. Suspension of officials after the incident is not an appropriate step. They should have been booked and sent to jail," she told media here. As per reports, Kamal Valmiki was called in for questioning on Tuesday about a theft to Ahirwan police station. Yesterday, he was found dead in lock-up. News of his death brought a large group of protesters, including Valmiki's relatives, to the police post. The mob clashed with the police and threw stones at them as violent protests erupted in Chakeri area. An angry mob also pelted stones at cops and reportedly tried to set station on fire later in the day. The agitators also blocked traffic on National Highway 2, causing the traffic to pile up. (ANI)
