Nagaon (Assam) [India], April 24 (ANI): Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who was at the Laharighat assembly segment under Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency on Wednesday, took a veiled dig at the Congress over its alleged appeasement politics, saying that the "Congress has been winning in the Muslim dominated assembly segment since 1967."
"With over 70% Muslim voters, Laharighat Assembly segment in Nagaon Loksabha has been won by Cong since 1967," Sarma said in a post on 'X'.
The Chief Minister, who was earlier in the Congress party till 2015, said that his former party was not defeated at Laharighat despite the Emergency and alleged corruption by the United Progressive Alliance (UPA).
"Imagine, even the crisis of Emergency and the corruption of UPA could not sink the Congress here. But this time Congress will not be able to escape the Modi wave," Sarma added.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, Congress' Pradyut Bordoloi won the elections from Nagaon with 49.5 per cent votes. Bharatiya Janata Party's Rupak Sharma came second bagging 48.4 per cent votes.
Earlier in the day, the Chief Minister also hit out at Indian Overseas Congress Chairman Sam Pitroda over his remarks on the redistribution of wealth saying that the intention of the Congress is "organised loot" and "legalised plunder".
In a post on X, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, "Family Advisor is spilling the beans - their intention is 'organised loot and legalised plunder' of your hard-earned money."
The polling for the 14 seats in Assam was scheduled to be held in three phases. Voting in five seats, Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur, Sonitpur, Kaziranga, and Jorhat are already over in the first phase held on April 19.
In this Lok Sabha election in Assam, the BJP is contesting in 11 out of 14 seats, while its ally parties, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), are contesting in two seats (Barpeta and Dhubri) and UPPL in one seat (Kokrajhar), respectively.
In the Lok Sabha elections of 2014, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured 7 of the 14 seats in Assam. Both the Congress and the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) claimed three seats each. During the 2019 elections, the BJP increased its seat count to 9, while the Congress maintained its three seats, and the AIUDF won a single seat. (ANI)
