Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], April 15 (ANI): Taking a dig at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress MP Mukul Wasnik called the party's manifesto for the Lok Sabha elections as a "Jumla patra" and said that the party has not provided any explanation for the promises it had made in the past.
Speaking to ANI, Wasnik said, "10 years ago, the Bharatiya Janata Party had made many promises to the entire country. Now that the elections are around the corner and the BJP has put forward their manifesto, it is necessary that the party also clears out all the promises fulfilled by them in the past."
"What happened to the promises of 2014, the promises made in 2019? What happened to employment, inflation, and the safety of women, what prices were given to farmers' produce, and what kind of security was given to the country?" said the Congress leader.
The Congress leader further said, "The Bharatiya Janata Party talked about giving new guarantees in the new package but has not given any account of the earlier guarantees. I think their new manifesto is just a 'Jumla patra'."
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), in its election manifesto, has promised a time-to-time hike in the MSP if elected to power for the third term.
The party released its "Sankalp Patra" on Sunday at its headquarters in New Delhi in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
The document, which underlined the party's 'Modi ki guarantee' slogan, lays down the Narendra Modi government's vision and promises for every section of society.
The manifesto received words of praise from the party workers and supporters while the opposition took criticism for it.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday alleged that two words "inflation and unemployment" were missing in promises made in the poll document.
The BJP had appointed a manifesto committee headed by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh that met twice to deliberate on its contents after the party had launched multiple exercises, including massive campaigns across the country to seek people's suggestions before the release of the 'Sankalp Patra'.
The BJP received over 1.5 million suggestions for its manifesto, including more than 400,000 through the NaMo app and over 1.1 million through videos.
The Lok Sabha polls in India are scheduled to take place from April 19, 2024, to June 1, 2024, to choose the 543 representatives for the 18th Lok Sabha. These elections will be conducted over seven phases, with the outcome being declared on June 4. (ANI)
