Cong didn't allow Army to take 'deterrant' action after Mumbai attack: Nirmala Sitharaman

Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], Mar 24 (ANI): Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday accused Congress party of not allowing the army to take any "deterrent" action after the 2008 Mumbai attack.
Speaking at an event here, Sitharaman said: "If only a similar deterrent action (airstrike) was taken after the Mumbai attack... and I have enough reasons to believe that armed forces did tell the govt at that time, 'if you want us to do something, we are ready but we want you to take the call."
"It pains me to say that the Congress party has called Army chief (Bipin Rawat) a 'Gali ka Gunda'. It hurts me. How can they abuse the Chief of the Army? Another leader of the same party has called the navy chief a liar," she said.
Addressing ex-servicemen, Sitharaman said: "The border security is the priority of the country. Every step has been taken to ensure security. Obtaining the best equipment has been the priority of the government since 2014. We did not have enough ammunition to fight the war."
Heaping praises on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, she said, "Modi is here to solve the problems. And he is not here to solve the current hurdle but to remove the systemic hurdles that were present in the system."
Under the leadership of PM Modi, Sitharaman said: "Within three years, a country which could not supply the basic essential vegetarian protein for its own consumers had to import scramble of the pulse. Today every pulse is available and farmers have been given right prices for their crops." (ANI)
