Patna (Bihar) [India], September 15 (ANI): Questioning the timing of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's resignation decision, BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad said on Sunday that it is shameful for someone who led a movement against corruption to now appear to be compromising with it.
The BJP leader compared Kejriwal's situation to other leaders like former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav and Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, who both resigned from their positions. He questioned if Kejriwal was "scared that the chair would slip out of his hands."
"Why didn't he resign earlier? We are staunch opponents of Lalu Yadav, but he too resigned from his post. Jharkhand CM (Hemant Soren) also resigned. Was Kejriwal afraid of losing his position? Why does he need two days?" Prasad asked.
He added, "The person who led a movement against major corruption is now making such a compromise with corruption. Today, the people of India are bowing their heads in shame."
Notably, two days after his release from Delhi's Tihar Jail, Kejriwal on Sunday announced his decision to step down from his position.
Kejriwal said that he would resign from the position of Chief Minister after two days and won't sit on the chair of CM until the public of Delhi declares him "honest." He also asked for early polls in Delhi, to be held along with the Maharashtra Assembly polls.
This announcement came as a shock for Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) workers and even surprised his opponents, the BJP and Congress.
BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj said, "Supreme Court has found that Arvind Kejriwal is king pin in Delhi liquor scam and not found him 'eligible' of going to the CM office and performing duties. So today Arvind Kejriwal has tried to put a moral cover on the compulsions of his bail condition but the people of Delhi are very intelligent. The people know that if Arvind Kejriwal had to resign, then why does he need 48 hours?"
However, Delhi minister and AAP leader Atishi revealed the reason behind the AAP supremo seeking two days' time to step down and said, "Today is Sunday, tomorrow is a holiday for Eid-e-Milad, so the next working day is Tuesday. That's why two days' time." (ANI)
