Combating terrorism, economy areas of concern: PM Modi at BRICS

Salcete (Goa) [India], Oct. 16 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said the agreement between the BRICS countries under the Goa declaration were unanimous in recognising the threat of terrorism, extremism and radicalization, adding that those who nurture, shelter, support and sponsor forces of violence and terror are a threat to the global community.

Salcete (Goa) [India], Oct. 16 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said the agreement between the BRICS countries under the Goa declaration were unanimous in recognising the threat of terrorism, extremism and radicalization, adding that those who nurture, shelter, support and sponsor forces of violence and terror are a threat to the global community. Calling the discussions as 'useful and forward looking', Prime Minister Modi said the BRICS nations need to work together and act decisively to end the menace of terrorism. "We were one in agreeing that BRICS need to work together and act decisively to combat this threat," he said. The Prime Minister also underscored the need for close coordination among the BRICS nations on tracking sources of terrorist financing and target the hardware of terrorism, including weapons' supplies, ammunition, equipment and training. "India is happy to note the unity of thought and purpose on this serious global challenge," Prime Minister Modi said. Highlighting the positive contribution of BRICS countries' to global economic growth after the 2008 financial crisis, Prime Minister Modi said that it was necessary for economies to make public investments in long-term infrastructure projects, coordinate macro-economic policy, drive growth and promote world trade and manufacturing with renewed vigor. The Prime Minister said the BRICS nations emphasized the central role for the World Trade Organisation (WTO) as the cornerstone of the multilateral trade architecture. Prime Minister Modi also pointed out that the BRICS was committed to strengthen consultations and cooperation on peace and security matters among the members. Prime Minister Modi said that BRICS welcomed the early entry into force of the Paris Climate agreement, adding India was proud to ratify it on October 2. (ANI)
