Coimbatore DCP blames misogynistic cinema for violence against women
Coimbatore (Tamil Nadu) [India], May 4(ANI): Blaming misogynistic cinema for rising violence against women in Indian society, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and order) Coimbatore, S. Lakshmi, on Thursday appealed to filmmakers to stop promoting violence in their films. "We are coming across dialogues and lyrics in films which are degrading women. It is not good for society. I should raise my voice against this. I appeal to the filmmakers to be more sensitive. Our motto is prevention and detection of crime. We speak against this wherever we get chances," she told ANI. She further requested filmmakers not to use such words which degrade women. "I appealed to filmmakers to be sensitive and more responsive while writing their dialogues and lyrics and think about your sisters and mothers," she added. Earlier, Union Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi has also held movies responsible for the rising crime against women in the country and urged the film fraternity to portray women in better light. "We have very important reason why men believe they can get away or they indulge in violence against women and that is films. If you look at films, which is a way to communicate messages, you will find romance almost always starts with eve-teasing. The man and friends will surround a woman, be mean to her trip her up, show her down, abuse her, touch her inappropriately and slowly she falls in love with him," Gandhi had said while speaking at Goa Fest. She said that violence against women is increasing because of the indecent representation of them in Bollywood and regional movies. "Romance in almost every film starts with eve teasing, be it Hindi or in regional films," she added. Besides entertainment, films and cinemas are one of the mediums of communicating and spreading positive message to the society but when it comes up with offensive and inciting contents it does not serve the role which it is meant for. The youth look upto the movies and get inspiration from it and when the films will show provocative content then it would not be wrong to blame it for increasing violence against women. (ANI)
