Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], August 13 (ANI): Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar on Tuesday criticised West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the Kolkata doctor rape, and murder case, saying that the CM is delaying the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry in the matter.
"The CM is delaying it - if she wants to have a CBI inquiry in this matter, she should hand it over soon as proofs in such cases do not remain for many days," said Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar.
Meanwhile, countering the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh said that Mamata Banerjee is following the 'Raj Dharma' and that she is extremely sad about the incident.
"... CM Mamata Banerjee is following the 'Raj Dharma'. Didi is acting like the mother of Bengal. She is also extremely sad because of this incident... Such incidents used to happen under the CPI(M) regime... Under BJP rule, Unnao, Hathras, Prayagraj, Gujarat, Bilkis, MP, Manipur all of it happened one after another. This shouldn't have happened in Bengal but it happened. It is a social crime. The CM said on day one that the case would be handed over to the CBI if needed... The police arrested the accused within 24 hours. She also said that the case will run in a fast-track court and they will try for his execution... Mamata Banerjee has given time to the police till Sunday... If there is no conclusion, then the case will be handed over to the CBI," said TMC leader Kunal Ghosh.
Earlier on Monday, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) demanded an impartial thorough investigation of the case and punishment of the culprits from the West Bengal government.
IMA has written to Union Minister JP Nadda demanding a detailed inquiry into the conditions enabling the crime as well as the steps to improve the safety of doctors especially women in the workplace.
IMA had given an ultimatum of two days on the above demands."We submit to you our demand for safe zone, defined security measures and Central Law on violence as deterrent measures. We hope you would consider our demands favourably in the light of deteriorating ground situation," IMA letter reads.
