New Delhi [India], July 24 (ANI): Congress MP Ranjeet Ranjan slammed the Centre over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, accusing the government of snatching the voting rights of 60-70 lakh people in the state, where the assembly elections are scheduled to be held later this year.
Speaking to ANI, Ranjan said, "...Is it not the right of the voter to ask whether he is a voter or not. We are not receiving any receipt regarding this. The opposition demands this proof. If the government claims that a person is not a voter, then the opposition is demanding proof...We are demanding proof of the verification of 2-3 crore people...The survey has already been done in Bihar. You (government) are clearly snatching the rights of around 60-70 lakh voters in Bihar..."
Earlier, Congress leader Shama Mohamed launched a strong attack on the BJP-led NDA government over Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in poll-bound Bihar on Wednesday, saying there is no transparency within the Election Commission of India and they are fooling the public.
"...There is no transparency in the Election Commission of India, and we are asking for time from the Election Commission of India regarding some anomalies, but they are not giving us time. This means something is wrong," she said.
She further questioned the decision to begin the SIR process just months ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections, alleging political bias.
"Why did the Election Commission start the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise three months before the Bihar Assembly elections... The Election Commission of India is fooling the public..." she told ANI.
Meanwhile, amid continued protest by the opposition, the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha were adjourned for the third day of the monsoon session on Wednesday.
Both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha faced major disruptions amid Opposition protest over the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls being undertaken by the Election Commission (EC) in Bihar ahead of the upcoming assembly elections, Operation Sindoor, the Pahalgam attack and US President Donald Trump's repeated claims of brokering peace between India and Pakistan. In an 'X' post, TMC said the government has "ek hi naara, line mein rahe desh bechara," pointing to past governmental measures including demonetisation, the COVID-19 vaccine rollout, the Special Identification Registration (SIR), and now the LPG shortage. The party described demonetisation as a "Tughlaqi farman" that forced ordinary citizens to wait in serpentine queues outside banks and ATMs for days to access their own money. The post also highlighted the 2020 COVID-19 oxygen crisis, when families stood in long lines outside hospitals and suppliers as the public health system collapsed.
