Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh in Lok Sabha

New Delhi [India], Feb 4 (ANI): Amid slogans of ‘CBI tota hai’ in the Lok Sabha, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday said that the clash between the law enforcement forces in Kolkata is a big danger to the nation’s “federal and political system.”
“Detaining CBI officials from performing their duties is unprecedented. The action was taken after the Supreme Court had ordered an investigation into Saradha chit fund case," Rajnath said in the Parliament.
"The Police Commissioner was summoned many times before but he did not appear. Hence, the CBI was forced to take this action. He was not cooperating in the investigation,” he added.
The Home Minister also informed that West Bengal Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi had summoned the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police and directed them to take immediate action to resolve the situation.
"Such clashes between the law enforcement agencies of the country are not just unfortunate but it is also a big danger for the nation’s federal and political system," he said.
His statement comes amidst West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee sitting on a dharna in central Kolkata after a huge showdown between the police and officials of the Central Bureau of Investigation on Sunday evening.
Mamata called for the protest after a CBI team reached Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar's residence to arrest him in connection with a chit-fund scam. The team of the Central probe agency was unceremoniously denied entry to city police chief's home and then was detained by the local cops.
A 1989-batch IPS officer of West Bengal cadre, Rajeev Kumar was heading a SIT on the Saradha and Rose Valley scams. The CBI wanted the top officer to hand over the seizure list made during his probe, sources said.
Reportedly, the top cop was to be questioned regarding missing documents and files but was not responding to notices to appear before the agency.
Earlier on Monday, the Supreme Court warned of strong action if the Kolkata Police Commissioner was found "even remotely thinking of destroying" evidence in the Saradha chit fund scam as the Centre moved the top court for arresting him. A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi will now hear the matter on Tuesday. (ANI)
