CBI may take decision on Chidambaram's custody in next hearing: Swamy on Aircel-Maxis case
New Delhi [India], Apr. 3 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Subramanian Swamy on Monday said the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the upcoming hearing will file a status report as to whether it will chargesheet former finance minister P. Chidambaram in the Aircel Marxis case, adding Chief Justice of India (CJI) J.S. Khehar has assured to find out the progress made in this case. "The matter of my interlocutory obligation on Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) illegal clearance by P. Chidambaram and his son came up today. The CBI had sent a letter to me saying that they are investigating the case and the Enforcement Directorate has filed a status report on all the illegal acquisition of money. The Chief Justice said he would like to study the reports and find out what progress is being made," Swamy told the media here. "We would will find out whether the CBI will take Chidambaram and his son into custody for the interrogation or not," he added. The Enforcement Directorate earlier in the day filed a status report in the Supreme Court regarding violation of the FIPB while stating the alleged role of Chidambaram in the case. The next hearing in the case is scheduled for May 2. Swamy had filed a petition in the apex court on the issue and last month was asked by it show " some concrete documentary proof " of Chidambaram's role in the alleged illegality. The BJP MP has said Chidambaram illegally granted Foreign Investment Promotion Board clearance to the Rs 3500-crore Aircel-Maxis deal in 2006. Earlier this month, a special court dropped all charges against former telecom minister Dayanidhi Maran, his brother Kalanithi Maran and others in the Aircel-Maxis deal cases lodged by the CBI and the ED. Last month, when the SC asked Swamy for proof on Chidambaram's alleged illegal action, he said his petition had nothing to do with the discharge of the Maran brothers in the Aircel-Maxis deal case.
