Cauvery row: AIADMK dubs Centre's move 'unfair'

Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], Oct. 3 (ANI): The AIADMK on Monday dubbed Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi's move to approach the Supreme Court against its last order on the Cauvery water dispute as 'unfair'. AIADMK leader C.R. Saraswathi said that Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa has been has been constantly requesting Prime Minister Narendra Modi to put an end to the Cauvery issue. "This is not fair. Whenever our Chief Minister met the Prime Minister, she requested him to put an end to the Cauvery issue. We want to get Cauvery water regularly from Karnataka. This was a prolonged issue and our CM went to the Supreme Court seeking justice and the apex court did give a very good judgment. We should honour the court," said Saraswathi. Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi earlier today moved the Supreme Court challenging its September 30 order asking the Centre to constitute the Cauvery Water Management Board (CWMB) and said that the apex court has no power in this regard. The Attorney General has in his plea stated that only Parliament has the power to constitute the CWMB and not the apex court. The Supreme Court had earlier on September 30 directed Karnataka to release 6,000 cusecs of Cauvery water from October 1 till October 6 after the state government deferred its order to provide water to Tamil Nadu and convened a meeting by Union Water Resource Minister Uma Bharti on September 29 to sort out differences between both states but failed to reach any conclusion. The apex court had on September 30 directed Karnataka to release 6,000 cusecs of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu from October 1 till October 6 and asked the CWMB to visit both states and file a report on the "ground realities" by October 6. Over the past month, both states are fighting a legal battle in various courts over the sharing and distribution of Cauvery waters. (ANI)
