Cauvery dispute: SC to hear petition seeking action against violence in K'taka, TN

New Delhi [India], Sept. 14 (ANI): In a bid to stop the violence in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu over the Cauvery water dispute, a Kanyakumari-based activist today moved the Supreme Court seeking direction to the two states to act against those who had indulged in protests. The apex court has agreed to hear the petition tomorrow. An ugly battle ensued between the two states over the issue of sharing Cauvery water. The situation escalated to a level where two civilians lost their lives. After violent protests against release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu, Bengaluru is limping back to normalcy. Curfew was lifted in all the 16 police station limits of Bengaluru city from 9 a.m. today. Meanwhile, the security forces conducted a flag march in Kamakshipalya area where curfew has been imposed. Pro-Kannada activists staged a protest in Channapatna on Bangalore-Mysore highway earlier today. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has sought appointment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to seek his intervention to bail out the state from the present crisis as the storage position in reservoirs is poor. Karnataka Road Transport buses have started operating to all places except Tamil Nadu. Metro rail has also resumed its service in the city since last night. Modifying its September 5 order, the apex Court earlier on Monday asked the Karnataka Government to release 12,000 cusecs of Cauvery River water every day to Tamil Nadu till September 20. It had earlier directed the Karnataka Government to release of 15,000 cusecs of water for 10 days as immediate relief to farmers in Tamil Nadu. (ANI)
