Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], November 6 (ANI): Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) working president KT Rama Rao on Wednesday raised concerns over the alleged negligence by Megha Engineering Infrastructure Limited (MEIL) in the Sunkishala project, which allegedly led to a loss of nearly Rs 80 crore in public funds. Rao urged the Telangana government to take action against the company.
"In today's newspapers across Telangana, it is widely reported that in the Sunkishala mishap, where nearly Rs 80 crores of public money was wasted, and lost because of the criminal negligence of the agency, a departmental inquiry has been conducted. It was recommended to blacklist the agency which has executed the work," said Rao. "I demand answers from the government, I would like to ask them - when are you going to blacklist this company called Megha Engineering?"
Rao questioned why MEIL continued to receive government contracts despite alleged mismanagement, asking for transparency. "I also demand answers on why this company is being given preferential treatment by the Govt... We are demanding action, and transparency from the Govt. We will hold them accountable, no matter what they would like to say," he added.
The Sunkishala Project was initiated to divert Krishna River water to Hyderabad, aiming to secure the city's drinking water supply through the Krishna Drinking Water Supply Project (KDWSP). This includes an intake well to source water from the Nagarjunasagar Project (NSP) during dry seasons. In August, a sidewall at Sunkishala collapsed, submerging the pump house, though no injuries were reported. Heavy inflows and delays in gate installation were cited as possible causes. The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has launched an inquiry into the incident. Previously led by the BRS, the project has faced delays and is now expected to be completed by May 2025.
Meanwhile, MEIL recently made headlines with a major CSR contribution of Rs 200 crore for building the new Young India Skills University campus in Telangana. MEIL has committed to constructing the campus, which is expected to include modern academic facilities and infrastructure. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, who performed the ceremony, expressed gratitude for MEIL's commitment while underlining that it will improve the education and skills development for the state's youth.
During a previous meeting, MEIL's Managing Director Krishna Reddy had presented the architectural designs for the university. The construction is expected to begin on November 8, following the Chief Minister's directive to finalise building plans. (ANI)
