Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], September 7 (ANI): Bhartiya Janata Party MP Jyotiramay Singh Mahato on Saturday, in a letter to Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare J P Nadda, accused West Bengal government of 'misusing' hospitals to shield 'corrupt TMC leaders' and asked for an investigation.
MP Mahato alleged that state-run hospitals, particularly SSKM hospital, have been 'repeatedly used' to 'obstruct justice' by shielding TMC leaders.
"Government-run medical institutions, which are supposed to provide care and treatment, have been repeatedly used to shield TMC ministers and leaders from legal investigations, The misuse of state-run hospitals, particularly SSKM Hospital, to obstruct justice has been well documented and even observed by the Calcutta High Court," Mahato wrote in the letter.
"For instance, when TMC leaders involved in the Teacher's Recruitment Scam (SSC) and Saradha chit fund scam were supposed to face legal proceedings, many of them conveniently ended up in SSKM's VIP wards under questionable grounds," Mahato further added.
Mahato further alleged that the health officials were 'involved' in tampering the evidence in the recent rape and murder of the junior doctor at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
"In recent tragic rape and murder of a young doctor at R G Kar Medical College has brought these issues to the forefront once again. There have been multiple attempts to tamper with evidence and cover up the crime. As you are aware, a leaked memo revealed the involvement of health officials in carrying out construction work near the crime scene just a day after the incident," Mahato said.
Mahato asked for a thorough investigation from J P Nadda into the alleged malpractices in Bengal's health care system.
"I humbly request your intervention and consideration for a thorough investigation into the malpractices in West Bengal's healthcare system. The involvement of health officials in shielding criminals, particularly in RG Kar case, demands urgent attention," Mahato wrote.
The body of the trainee doctor was found in the seminar room of the R G Kar hospital on August 9. The incident sparked nationwide protests. A civic volunteer was arrested shortly after. The CBI also arrested Dr Sandip Ghosh, for alleged financial misconduct at the medical establishment. (ANI)
