New Delhi [India], July 23 (ANI): Congress MP Jebi Mather raised serious concerns over the Election Commission of India's (ECI) Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, alleging that the exercise threatens the foundation of Indian democracy.
"We are raising this issue... The basic foundation of our democracy is being attacked. The elections play a very crucial role, and in an election, the voter list is the most important thing. And if the voter list itself is being manipulated, and the election commission is supporting all that, then where is democracy heading in our country? This certainly needs to be addressed..," she said.
Earlier in the day, ahead of the commencement of the third day of the Monsoon Session, INDIA bloc MPs staged a protest for the second consecutive day at Parliament's Makar Dwar, opposing the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls being undertaken by the Election Commission in poll-bound Bihar.
The opposition leaders demanded a halt to the revision exercise, alleging it was stripping voting rights from eligible citizens.
Prominent leaders, including Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Deputy LoP Gaurav Gogoi, Congress MPs Priyanka Gandhi and Manickam Tagore, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut, and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, were among those present during the protest.
The leaders held placards and raised slogans such as "Save our Democracy" and "Save our Constitution," calling for an immediate stop to the SIR process.
Meanwhile, Lok Sabha has been adjourned until 11 am tomorrow due to continuous uproar from Opposition MPs regarding their various demands. The Rajya Sabha has been adjourned until 11:00 am on July 24.
On a separate note, Mather commented on the resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, stating, "Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar deserved much more than this in terms of respect, dignity, and gracefulness... There was not a single word of gratitude or thank you in the tweet by the PM..."
Dhankhar resigned from his post on Monday evening "to prioritise health care and abide by medical advice".
He sent his resignation letter to President Droupadi Murmu. (ANI)
