New Delhi [India], December 4 (ANI): Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi criticised the Assam Government's decision to ban the consumption and sale of beef in the state, accusing Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of trying to divert attention from the BJP's recent loss in the Jharkhand Assembly elections.
Gogoi emphasised that the people of Assam would similarly hold the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accountable for corruption, misgovernance, and accumulation of wealth in the next election.
"After leading the BJP to a humiliating loss in Jharkhand, the Chief Minister of Assam is attempting to obscure his failure. Like the discerning voters of Jharkhand, the people of Assam will also punish the BJP's corruption, misrule, and obscene wealth in the upcoming election," the Congress leader wrote on X.
This statement followed CM Sarma's announcement on Wednesday of a state-wide ban on the consumption and sale of beef, including its serving in restaurants, hotels, and public places.
"In Assam, we have decided that beef will not be served in any restaurant or hotel, nor will it be allowed in any public function or public place. From today, we have completely prohibited the consumption of beef in hotels, restaurants, and public areas. Earlier, our decision was to stop eating beef near temples, but now we have expanded it to the entire state, prohibiting its consumption in community spaces, public areas, hotels, or restaurants," Sarma said during a press conference.
Sarma, who served as the BJP's co-in-charge for the Jharkhand Assembly elections, had earlier expressed sorrow over the NDA's loss in the state. Sharing his thoughts on X, he wrote, "The loss in Jharkhand is deeply painful for me personally, even though we secured victory in all five by-elections in Assam. I have witnessed the unwavering dedication and relentless efforts of our Karyakartas in Jharkhand, who gave their all in this election."
Notably, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) secured 34 seats, with its allies winning 22 seats. Among JMM's allies, the Congress won 16 seats, RJD secured four, and CPI-ML bagged two. The BJP won 21 seats, while its allies AJSU, Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), and JD-U won one seat each. (ANI)
