New Delhi [India], July 25 (ANI): Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Supremo Mayawati on Friday said that the Central government's announcement that it has no current plan or intention to reconsider or remove "socialist" or "secular" from the Constitution is "appropriate" and "commendable".

In a post in hindi on X, Mayawati said, "The statement given yesterday by the country's Law Minister in Parliament that the government has neither the intention nor is considering anything related to removing words like 'secularism' from the Preamble of the Constitution is appropriate and commendable. This is particularly relieving news and a good assurance for all those people, including our party B.S.P., across the country and the world, who are completely opposed to any inappropriate changes or tampering with the Constitution drafted by the revered Baba Saheb Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar and were also concerned about such erroneous demands being raised".
Mayawati noted that India is the world's most populous country, home to people of various religions, including Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Christian, Buddhist, and Parsi. "Through its Constitution, India's unique characteristic of unity in diversity is an unparalleled identity worldwide."
"It was with the thought of giving equal respect and honour to people of all religions and establishing an egalitarian social system that Baba Saheb Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar drafted the Constitution, and its reflection can be seen at every step in the Constitution," she said.
She also referred to the controversial remarks of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh's General Secretary Dattatreya Hosabale
"The Central Government has clarified its position in line with the sacred intent of the Constitution regarding the recent controversy over the Constitution, which is a good thing, and it is the desire and expectation of the country that the government will steadfastly maintain this stand without caring about or worrying about anyone," Mayawati added.
The Central government has no current plan or intention to reconsider or remove socialist or secular from the Constitution, nor have any proceedings been initiated for the same, government has informed the Rajya Sabha.
Responding to a question by Rajya Sabha MP Ramji Lal Suman, the Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal stated in a written reply on Thursday that "the government's official stand is that there is no current plan or intention to reconsider or remove the words "socialism" and secularism" from the preamble of the Constitution".
In June earlier, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh's General Secretary Dattatreya Hosabale had said that terms like "Socialism" and "Secularism" were forcibly inserted into the Constitution -- a move that needs to be reconsidered.
The RSS leader was addressing a program on the 50th anniversary of the Emergency held at Dr Ambedkar International Centre, jointly organised by the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (under the Ministry of Culture), where he said that the Emergency imposed on the country on June 25, 1975 was the "biggest blow to Indian democracy."
The comments were later criticised by several Opposition leaders. (ANI)
