Etawah (Uttar Pradesh) [India], April 12 (ANI): Coming out in the defence of Rajya Sabha MP and Samajwadi Party leader Ramji Lal Suman, SP president Akhilesh Yadav on Saturday expressed hope that the administration in Uttar Pradesh will not treat senior party leaders in any disrespectful manner.
"I have full faith that the administration will not be able to treat Ramji Lal Suman in a disrespectful manner," he said.
"If the government has still given a free hand, then the government is responsible for this," he added.
Ramji Lal Suman has sparked controversy with his statement on Rana Sanga, a 16th-century Rajput king. He called him a "traitor" for allegedly bringing Babur, the founder of the Mughal dynasty, to defeat Ibrahim Lodi.
On March 26, violence erupted outside the residence of SP MP Suman in Agra. Unidentified individuals resorted to pelting stones, breaking window panes and vandalising vehicles parked outside.
Yadav's statement came in the wake of a rally organized by Karni Sena in Agra on Saturday to commemorate the birth anniversary of 16th-century Rajput ruler Rana Sanga and also in response to the controversy surrounding MP Ramjilal Suman's remarks about Rana Sanga.
The SP Chief, also took on the Union government and said that it had "deliberately" brought the Waqf Amendment Act keeping in mind the upcoming Assembly elections in Bihar and West Bengal, adding that legislation was also brought to hide their own failures.
Akhilesh Yadav made these remarks following the violent protests which have occurred in West Bengal against the Waqf Amendment Act. Addressing a press conference,
Akhilesh Yadav said, "Mamata Banerjee will restore law and order there. The central government has spoiled the environment. The central government has brought this (Waqf) law deliberately...They want to win elections in Bihar and West Bengal where they have totally failed...To hide their own failures, they have deliberately created this atmosphere by bringing the Waqf Bill."
