Akhilesh should accept 'moral responsibility' of failing to provide safety: Abha Singh

New Delhi, Aug 1 (ANI): Branding the Akhilesh Yadav-led Uttar Pradesh government's regime as 'Maha-jungle raj' after the brutal gang-rape of a woman and her daughter in Bulandshahr district, women's rights activist and eminent lawyer Abha Singh demanded that Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav should "step down" and accept the moral responsibility of failing to provide safety to the people. "The SP should have been suspended. Why the inspector? Why should the CM not step down? By owing the moral responsibility that he is unable to give safety and security. If he cannot keep the highway safe how can we expect him to keep the remote areas safe," Singh told ANI. "My question is where were the police, where was the patrolling cars which was to give safety and security to women. It clearly shows that it is jungle raj. We were talking about 'jungle raj' in Bihar but it is the 'Maha jungle raj' in Uttar Pradesh where the police has been unable to protect women. 92 rapes take place everyday in India. It clearly shows that law has failed to protect women," she added. The senior advocate further said, "It is heart-rendering, it is shocking, it is a sad day for the country where a mother and daughter, a fourteen year girl and a 35-year woman in front of her husband is raped. The father sees his daughter and wife being raped by 15 men for three hours and no help comes." The incident took place on Friday night when a 35-year-old woman and her 14-year-old daughter were allegedly gang-raped by a group of robbers. The victims were on their way from Noida to Shahjahanpur with the other family members when their vehicle was stopped near a cycle repairing shop in Dostpur village on NH-9, which connects Noida and Bulandshahr. However, the Uttar Pradesh government on Sunday swung into action and rushed top officials to Bulandshahr. Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has given "24 hours time" to SSP Bulandshahr to crack the case while directing disciplinary action against policemen of the area. (ANI)
