Advance technology should be used to remove oil from Chennai waters: DMK
New Delhi [India], Feb 3 (ANI): The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) on Friday slammed the Ennore port authorities for inadequate method of removing oil from the Chennai shoreline and called for using advance technology to clean the water. DMK leader TKS Elangovan said that the oil spill has immensely affected the fishermen and the marine life. "The thing is that the port authorities did not want to accept that there was an oil spill, first statement of the port authorities was there was no oil spill, subsequent to which they said that only one ton of oil got spilled, where it's has been found that 20 tons of oil has been spilled. And it has spread between Kamarajar port and Chennai port. It has affected the fishermen as fishes died, the turtles which are a rare species died because of the oil spill," said Elangovan. "Port authorities are collecting the oils with buckets and that is not the way to remove widely spread oil, they should use some technology which will neutralise the oil or they should use some technology which will remove the oil completely from the sea. It only shows the under preparedness of the port to face such calamities," he added. The incident took place on January 28 when 'M T BW Maple', with a flag of 'Isle of Man', was leaving after emptying Liquefied Petroleum Gas and M T Dawn, Kanchipuram, loaded with petroleum oil lubricant, was on its way to berth at the Ennore port. The Petroleum Ministry has advised Indian Oil's R&D to take active part in the containment of the oil spill that took place near Ennore Port at Chennai recently.(ANI)
