Indore (Madhya Pradesh) [India], September 23 (ANI): Former Congress leader Acharya Pramod Krishnam criticised Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi for his recent remarks on the Sikh community and reservation in India during his US visit and demanded an apology in this regard.
Speaking to ANI on Sunday, Krishnam accused Gandhi of "insulting the country on foreign land" and said, "Rahul Gandhi tells a lot of lies, he lies to the people of the country, to his party members, to women, and to farmers too, he even lies to the depressed and impoverished classes."
"Rahul Gandhi should understand that he is not just a Congress politician, he is the Leader of Opposition, he is the whole country's politician. Even if Asaduddin Owaisi, goes out of the country, I don't expect him to say such remarks and insult the country. Yeh (Rahul Gandhi) akele ese neta hai jo desh ke bahar jaake desh ko badnaam karte hai, desh ko nanga karne ka kaam karte hai (Only politician to go out of the country and insult the country, strip the country naked). He should apologise to the nation," he added.
The ruling BJP came down heavily on Gandhi for his remarks made during his visit to the US earlier this month.
BJP MP Anurag Thakur accused Rahul Gandhi of supporting "anti-Indians" and said that the latter has created new records on telling lies.
"The way Farooq Abdullah changed statements in Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir, similarly, Rahul Gandhi changes statements when he is in foreign land. whenever he went on a foreign trip, he disrespected and insulted India and said lies only one after another. Rahul Gandhi has created new records on telling lies. The comments he made on Sikhs about whether it is about wearing turbans, kadas, or kirpan, or it is about going to gurudwara, if Sikhs were disrespected, then it was during the tenure of Rajiv Gandhi, and, in that too, Modi government formed SIT to give justice to the victims," Thakur told ANI earlier.
BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya alleged that Gandhi's overseas engagements have consistently been detrimental to India's image. "Every time Rahul Gandhi goes abroad, he indulges in the most divisive anti-India politics, including hobnobbing with agencies and collaborating with forces inimical to India's interest. He has gone to the extent of pleading with Western powers to interfere in Indian politics," Malviya said in a post on X.
However, Gandhi defended his remarks pertaining to Sikhs and other sections of Indian society and accused the BJP of resorting to lies and making desperate attempts to silence him. He vowed to always speak up for the values that define India.
"I want to ask every Sikh brother and sister in India and abroad: Is there anything wrong with what I have said? Shouldn't India be a country where every Sikh--and every Indian--can freely practice their religion without fear?" the Congress MP asked.
"As usual, the BJP is resorting to lies. They are desperate to silence me because they cannot stand the truth. But I will always speak up for the values that define India: our unity in diversity, equality, and love," he added. (ANI)
