New Delhi [India], February 9 (ANI): Congress MP Renuka Chowdhury on Sunday hit out at Aam Aami Party (AAP), saying that they lost the polls because of their "ego". She said that Congress was contesting the assembly elections in Delhi to strengthen its hold and was not in alliance with any party.
Speaking on the relevance of INDIA bloc, the Congress leader said that its existence on a national level was important for country's interest and protecting the Constitution.
"We were fighting for our place. We were not with anyone. AAP lost the polls because of their ego. This proves what we were saying earlier. The alliance (INDIA alliance) should remain for the country's interests. We respect them and believe in them. This (keeping alliance) is the only way where we can stay together to protect the country's constitution," Chowdhury told ANI.
Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has dissolved the Seventh Legislative Assembly of the National Capital Territory of Delhi with effect from Sunday.
This came after Atishi tendered her resignation as Delhi Chief Minister on Sunday, following her party's loss in the Delhi assembly elections. She submitted her resignation to Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena at the Raj Niwas.
The dissolution of the assembly paves the way for the formation of a new government in the national capital under the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) leadership.
BJP is poised to form the government in Delhi after 27 years as the party secured over two-third majority in assembly polls, ending over 10 years' rule of AAP.
The last BJP government in Delhi was from 1993 to 1998.
Of the 70 assembly constituencies, BJP has win 48 seats with AAP winning in merely 22 constituencies with its prominent leaders including former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, former minister Satyendra Jain and Saurabh Bharadwaj among others lost the polls.
Kejriwal lost the New Delhi assembly seat to BJP's Parvesh Verma by a margin of 4089 votes, the Election Commission announced on Saturday.
Kejriwal has been representing the New Delhi seat for over 10 years since winning against the then Delhi CM Sheila Dikshit in the 2013 assembly polls.
The EC data shows that the BJP candidate got 30,088 votes, whereas the AAP chief got 25,999 votes while Congress' Sandeep Dikshit, also contesting from the same seat, showed a dismal performance, getting only 4568 votes. (ANI)
