Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], July 23 (ANI): Congress MP Imran Masood has raised concerns over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process, questioning the rapid execution of the exercise.
Speaking to ANI, Masood alleged, "What kind of formula or technique do they have that they managed to complete this in just one month? This raises suspicion. They aim to deprive tribals, Dalits, backwards classes, and Muslims of their voting rights by removing their names from voter lists."
Masood further accused certain forces of attempting to undermine democracy, stating, "They want to steer the country toward a system where 10% of the population rules, and 90% are reduced to slaves. We will fight till the end to protect democracy."
The Congress MP's remarks come amid ongoing debates over the SIR process, with opposition parties alleging irregularities in voter list revisions.
The SIR process has also been questioned by members of the ruling alliance, JDU MP Giridhari Yadav alleged that the SIR has been imposed forcefully.
"Election Commission has no practical knowledge. It neither knows the history nor the geography of Bihar. It took 10 days for me to collect all the documents. My son stays in America. How will he do the signatures in just a month? This (SIR) has been imposed on us forcefully. At least 6 months' time should have been given for this... I am giving my personal opinion. It doesn't matter what the party is saying... This is the truth. If I can't say the truth, why have I become an MP?" he said.
Meanwhile, both Houses of Parliament witnessed repeated disruptions on Tuesday, the second day of the Monsoon Session, amid protests by the Opposition over the SIR exercise.
Several opposition MPs have submitted notices to move adjournment motions in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha to discuss the issue. In the Lok Sabha, Congress MP Manickam Tagore submitted a notice to move an adjournment motion to discuss the SIR and its "threat to democratic rights."
In the Rajya Sabha, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Sanjay Singh also submitted a motion seeking discussion on the "constitutional and electoral implications" of the revision process.
Amid the protests, both Houses were adjourned till July 23. The Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha will again meet at 11 am on Wednesday. (ANI)
